Getting Flamjangled 16-18 March

It took me a while, but at some point I realised that the most important thing in life is to have fun.

Yes, of course we have to be responsible too, as in ‘able’ to ‘respond’ to our environment (thanks to Martin Wolfaardt for sharing that analogy). Be sharp. Look around you. Be awake. Act with intention and purpose in response to your surroundings. This is what responsibility is. And when your purpose, next weekend, at the Flamjangled Tea Party, is to have fun, let that too be done wholeheartedly, with flare, with fervour, to your heart’s fulfillment.

It’s the responsible/fun thing to do! (You make the meaning.)

Righteous | Live at Alma Café

In October 2011 I was invited to perform a set at Alma Café in Mowbray, CT. It was a kind of artist, meet venue affair, and while neither planned it well in advance, I think we both were pleasantly surprised by the evening’s charm. Here’s to hopefully many more performances at this hearty Cape Town venue.

KENAZ | A South African Journey

The footage for this video was captured on a GoPro Hero HD and Panasonic HX-WA10 HD mountable/handheld cameras. All the scenes were shot in South Africa by Meri Kenaz (with a helping hand lent where needed). Music written and performed by Meri Kenaz.

Meri’s first full video production, the Deeper than Blood music video paints a picture of what’s to come: a regular online stream of sight-and-sound journeys, weaving music and adventure with art and writings, as she explores life through a musician’s lens.

A good old bout o’Pondo Fever

I took a bike and my feet to the edge of the world, and peered into the cave that echoes everything ancient. A place where the footprints of wild cats and cliffhanging goats lie etched into the rock. Intricate gardens, like jurassic worlds below, cover the valleys and gorges which cup the river as it comes coursing ever closer to the Indian Ocean. Water seeps from the earth, collecting itself from the hills that feed it and, having quenched every plant and beast on its way, finally pours into the tumultuous ocean in one powerful spurt, also known as Waterfall Bluff. The Meeting

He suggests its like meeting a new friend, she feels its the time she feels most true to herself, we all agree there’s nothing quite like it.

Last Wednesday night I joined Gil Hockman and Victoria Landey (Shotgun Tori) at Café Barcelona in Pretoria for a gig they shared with Pretoria’s dynamic Afrikaans rock group, Die See. Afterwards we were discussing the intricacies of playing a live music show, especially to a new audience. Continue reading

On Travelling, Cities, Polution and Coffee

There is a meditative charm to being on the open road. Your car greedily gulps up the tar and gravel stream that’s pulling you ahead bringing scenes of diverse beauty to swish by. The ever changing scenery stimulates your imagination to dream, or to find a solution to a problem, and to philosophize about the many wonders and/or horrors of our life and times.

You travel to Grahamstown, to Jeffreys Bay, to Nieu Bethesda and Clarens. You see the Drakensberg covered in snow, Pondoland’s grasslands being burnt, Continue reading
